Local Activism Weekly Round-up, March 17

The Illinois legislative season is well underway.  Several important bills are under consideration.  There are also some upcoming protests planned.

A BIG WIN

According to Indivisible Chicago: “Indivisible Chicago had a BIG Win today! As you have probably noticed by our Daily Actions, we have been working hard to support SB 982 and HB 780 which require all candidates for POTUS and VPOTUS to release 5 years of tax returns to be placed on the IL ballot. Because of our persistent calling SB 982 was one of a handful of votes scheduled for a sub committee vote today. It passed. Not only did it pass sub committee, but they immediately voted on the bill in the full committee and it passed the full committee. SB 982 will now go to a full senate floor vote. Thank you for all your efforts. Without your help this bill would undoubtedly be stuck in committee.
Today we celebrate. Tomorrow we start working on the floor vote.”

ACTION NEEDED

Reach out to your state rep or state senator regarding the following important immigrant protection bills under consideration in the Illinois State House.
Sen President John Cullerton introduced Amendment 1, which among other things, protects immigrants’ personal information held by local and state law enforcement from being shared with federal immigration authorities.  It prohibits for-profit immigration detention facilities in Illinois, and prohibits state and local law enforcement from stopping or detaining individuals based solely on their immigration status.  This important Senate Bill only has 3 co-sponsors and is on the calendar for its 3rd reading. Please call your state senator and ask them to co-sponsor SB0031 as amended.  If you are in Bill Cunningham’s district, call his Springfield Office at (217) 782-5145
This bill would expand immigrant protections by expanding sanctuary status to state-wide state and local law enforcement agencies.  This bill has been referred to the Executive Committee, which has not yet scheduled a hearing for this bill.  The bill does not have any southwest side co-sponsors at this time. This Bill creates immigrant safe zones in Schools, Hospitals, and houses of worship.  The bill prohibits schools, medical treatment and health care facilities, and places of worship from allowing access to law enforcement agencies to conduct federal immigration enforcement actions without a valid warrant.    The bill is on the calendar for a 2nd reading soon.
